Conference Theme

Biological Control: Approaches and Applications

Globally, upto 30% of agricultural yields are affected by pests and diseases despite intensive chemical pesticide use. Biological control of insect pests and diseases is one of the major ecosystem services provided to agriculture worldwide. Natural enemies such as predators, parasitoids and pathogens play a major role in limiting damage caused by nature and exotic pests. The main theme of the conference is to address issues related to various biological control approaches in the context of biodiversity, increased chemical pesticide pressure and climate change. The emphasis would also be on the challenges faced by researchers, farmers and other stakeholders in implementing biological control programs. The conference would include keynote addresses, plenary and oral presentations and poster sessions.

ICBC 2018 Organizers

Society for Biocontrol Advancement (SBA), Bengaluru

The Society for Biocontrol Advancement (SBA) was established in 1986 as Indian Society for Biocontrol Advancement (ISBA) at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India and later started functioning as Society for Biocontrol Advancement (SBA) from 1996 at Project Directorate of Biological Control, Bengaluru, which was recently upgraded as ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources. The objective of SBA is to promote research, create awareness and implementation of biological control of insect pests, pathogens and weeds in India. SBA creates a platform for the exchange of views.

ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), Bengaluru

ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), formerly National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects (NBAII) is located in Bengaluru in the same premises at which the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control (CIBC), Indian Station, was established in 1957. The advent of CIBC marked the beginning of organized and systematic biological control research in India. During this period, our knowledge of natural enemies of crop pests and weeds increased manifold. CIBC Indian station was closed during 1987 and All India Coordinated Research Project on Biological Control of Crop Pests and Weeds (AICRP-BC&W), which was launched in 1977 under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research was shifted to the same campus in 1988.

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous organization under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, it was established on July 16th, 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in pursuance of the report of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. The ICAR has its headquarters at New Delhi.

In Collaboration with

Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI)

CABI (Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International) is an international not-for-profit organization that improves people’s lives worldwide by providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment. Approach involves putting information, skills and tools into people's hands. CABI's 48 member countries guide and influence work which is delivered by scientific staff based in CABI’s global network of centres.

The International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS)

At the first International Plant Protection Congress (IPPC) in Louvain, Belgium, 1946, Dr. Olof Ryberg of Malmo, Sweden gave an address to the Congress in which he stated - "The world needs an international organization for plant protection, not only to plan coming congresses, but to a much greater extent to take care of the current work on international plant protection questions". Dr. Ryberg observed that the activities of the new organization should become multifarious and that it should give attention to important global crop protection problems/issues, publish a regular newsletter and a year-book to summarize important events in crop protection, and develop a working relationship with the United Nations.

IOBC Parthenium Working Group

IOBC is affiliated with the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) as the Section of Biological Control of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) was established in 1955 as a global organization affiliated to the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). IOBC promotes environmentally safe methods of pest and disease control. It is a voluntary organization of biological-control workers. Membership in IOBC gives individuals and organizations the opportunity to participate in biological control activities beyond their specific jobs and workplaces, to step outside their bureaucracies, and to contribute to the promotion of biological control worldwide.
